How much does it cost to import tiles from China to Australia?

A full 20ft container of porcelain tiles (about 1,050–1,100 sqm) typically lands at AUD 12–22 per square metre delivered, depending on tile grade — including the tiles, sea freight, customs clearance, import duty and GST. Smaller orders of 200–500 sqm ship as shared-container (LCL) freight and cost more per sqm. How many square metres of tiles fit in a 20ft container?

About 1,050–1,100 sqm of standard 600×600mm porcelain. Palletised tiles pack at roughly 0.03 CBM per square metre, so they fill a 20ft container’s usable volume of about 33 CBM at around 1,090 sqm — just before the ~26–28 tonne weight limit (~1,250 sqm) would be reached. Larger orders ship as a 40ft container or two 20ft containers.
Do I pay import duty and GST on tiles from China?

GST of 10% applies to the customs value plus freight and insurance. Import duty on ceramic tiles depends on their tariff classification and ChAFTA eligibility. Spotyard passes duty and GST through at cost with no markup, and our DDP service can pay them on your behalf so you receive one all-inclusive price.
What is the minimum tile order I can import?

There is no hard minimum — orders from about 200 sqm ship as shared-container (LCL) freight. However, because tiles are heavy, per-sqm freight on small orders is significantly higher. From around 950 sqm a dedicated 20ft container becomes cheaper per sqm — factories typically set their MOQ at one container and allow mixing different tile styles within it. We can also consolidate your tiles with other building materials for the same project.

How to source building materials from China to Australia
For residential builders, procurement starts with the approved material schedule and installation requirements. Comparing a photograph and a unit price is not enough to establish the same product, delivered scope or project suitability.
1. Create the material schedule
List every item by room, drawing reference, size, finish and quantity. Identify selections that must match each other, including tiles, hardware and joinery finishes.
2. Review product evidence
Agree the intended use and project requirements with your designer, certifier and installer. Request evidence for the exact product or system before supplier selection.
3. Approve samples and shop drawings
Check opening sizes, handedness, hardware, glazing, finishes and installation details. Resolve substitutions in writing before production.
4. Sequence the orders
Work backwards from each required on-site date. Allow separately for sample approvals, manufacture, inspection, consolidation, freight, clearance and site access.
5. Inspect and identify the cargo
Agree inspection scope, packaging, room or opening labels, spare items and a packing list that can be reconciled with the material schedule.
6. Plan site delivery
Confirm delivery postcode, vehicle access, unloading equipment, storage and who checks the shipment on arrival. A freight estimate alone does not establish a site unloading arrangement.

Can I source doors, windows, tiles and ACP in one project?
Yes, send one material schedule covering the different categories. Each supplier still needs its own specification, approval, production and packing checks. Consolidation depends on cargo readiness, packaging and the agreed freight service.
Does a supplier certificate mean the product is approved for my house?
A supplier’s general certificate does not establish suitability for every project. Match the exact model, system, scope and intended use to the evidence requested by your designer, certifier and installer before ordering.
How do I compare local supply with an imported quotation?
Use the same sizes, finishes, quantities and performance requirements. Include samples, tooling, inspection, packaging, freight, taxes, delivery and installation-related costs within each quotation’s stated scope.
